Why Sports
In one word: "endorphins". It is the "feel-good" chemical for our physical and mental well-being and growth. At the Summer Portal, we not only ensure that ample time is set aside for campers to engage in leisure activities to wind down from a fulfilling day, but also offer structured coaching in three different sports activities which share the same set of learning objectives.
Through sports – be it basketball, table-tennis or fencing, students learn a plethora of transferrable skills and generic attributes such as the ability to perform under pressure, communication skills etc.; but most importantly of all, the practice of grit and sportsmanship.
Basketball
Engaging in the game of basketball helps students develop essential teamwork skills as they learn to collaborate and communicate with peers on the court. The rhythm and coordination required are not far from what are required for musicians, while strategic elements of basketball foster critical thinking and tactical awareness. Additionally, the sport promotes resilience and sportsmanship, teaching children how to handle both victories and defeats gracefully. All levels of players are welcome!
Table-Tennis
The game of table tennis introduces students to a unique blend of physical and cognitive skills that are essential for personal development. As players engage in this fast-paced sport, they enhance their hand-eye coordination and reflexes, which are vital for both athletic performance and daily activities. The game also emphasizes strategic thinking and quick decision-making, as players must anticipate their opponent's moves and adapt their tactics accordingly. Additionally, table tennis fosters concentration and focus, helping children improve their mental resilience. Through friendly competition, campers learn the values of sportsmanship and respect for others, making table tennis a fun and enriching experience that promotes holistic growth. All levels of players are welcome!
Fencing
Through fencing, students develop both their physical agility and mental acuity, acquiring essential skills such as balance, coordination, and timing. The sport encourages strategic thinking and quick reflexes, as fencers must anticipate their opponent's actions and respond with precision. Additionally, fencing promotes discipline and self-control, as students learn to respect rules and maintain composure under pressure. No prior experience required!
